Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings extended their win streak to four games on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Brandon scored first for the fifth time this season. Connor Gutenberg opened the scoring just 8:26 into the first period. Brandon is a perfect 5-0 when scoring the game’s opening goal.
The Wheat Kings would quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Caiden Daley and Stelio Mattheos. For Daley, it was his first of the year while Mattheos’ goal came on the powerplay. That goal marks his 7th of the season on the man advantage, a stat that leads the WHL.
Edmonton would get their opportunities in the 2nd period to get back in the game but couldn’t convert. The Oil Kings went 0/5 on the powerplay and are now just 2/11 in two games vs Brandon.
Kale Clague an and Gunnar Wegleitner would add insurance markers for Brandon, who move to 5-2-0-1 on the season. Ethan Cap and Matthew Robertson would reply for the Oil Kings.
Logan Thompson made 19 saves for the win, while former Wheat King prospect Josh Dechaine stopped 29 in a losing effort.
Brandon is back on the ice again Saturday when they open a two-game home stand vs the Prince Albert Raiders. (7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 4:00 p.m. Sunday)
