Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings were back on the ice Monday as preparations begin for Friday’s WHL season opener.
The Wheat Kings wrapped up the pre-season with a 3-1-0 record, including wins over Moose Jaw and Regina.
"We’ve had a lot of guys away and a lot of young guys had the opportunity to play in all four games," said Head Coach David Anning. "Practices have been up tempo and up beat… We’ve been encouraged by the process and hopefully it keeps building heading into Friday."
Stelio Mattheos was back on the ice in Brandon on Monday after being re-assigned by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. Mattheos skated on a line with Baron Thompson and Linden McCorrister.
The roster continued to take shape as the day progressed as Tanner Kaspick was returned to the club by the St.Louis Blues. Both Kaspick and Mattheos are expected to be available for Friday’s home opener.
"Those are guys we lean on heavily and they are going to play important roles for us," added Anning. "To get them back this far in advance of Friday is encouraging…it allows us to play with line combinations and get some chemistry."
Friday’s game is presented by Telus and the Brandon Sun and is expected to be a sell-out crowd. You can get tickets for the game at they Keystone Centre Box Office.
