– Three second period goals helped propel the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 4-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings. Jayce Hawryluk and Peter Quenneville scored the goals for the Wheat Kings, with hawryluk snapping a 12-game goalless streak. – German import Donata Huebert of the Brandon University women’s volleyball team has been recognized as the third star of the week in the Canada West conference. The former CIS libero of the year had 35 digs in a four-set win against the Winnipeg Wesmen last Wednesday, which is tied for third all-time in a conference match.
– The Brandon Bobcats fell two spots to #9 in the latest CIS Top 10 men’s volleyball rankings. BU settled for a split against the Winnipeg Wesmen last week and sit in a three-way tie for the final playoff spot in Canada West at 8-and-10. On the women’s side, the Lady ‘Cats are holding steady at #2 following a sweep of the U-of-W. Brandon has a clinched a playoff spot with a 14-and-4 record, surpassing the team’s highest win total in the program’s nine year history. The BU volleyball teams play their final regular season home matches against Trinity Western this weekend.
– The league-leading Selkirk Steelers extended their winning streak to 19 in a row last night by downing the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 4-1. Shane Gingera got a hat-trick for the Steelers while Devon Schade had the lone goal for the Wolverines, who have lost six straight. In other action in the, the Dauphin Kings doubled the OCN Blizzard 6-3 to extend their winning streak to eight in a row. Brandon product Mitch Van Teeling had two goals and an assist for the Kings, who lead the MJHL’s Sher-Wood Division by two points over the Virden Oil Capitals with a game in hand.
– The Miniota-Elkhorn C’Hawks padded their lead atop the North Central Hockey League. Kelsey and Kyle McLeod had two goals each as the defending champion C’Hawks got past the Minnedosa Bombers 6-5. Dillon Stonehouse added three helpers for Miniota-Elkhorn, who sit five points ahead of Minnedosa and Grandview for first-place in the standings.
– Sky Brown turned aside 24 shots for the shutout as the Westman Wildcats blanked the Yellowhead Chiefs 6-0 in Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League action. Ashton Bell and Jaycee Magwood had two goals apiece for the Wildcats, who extended their winning streak to six in a row.
– The MHSAA rural athlete of the week is Skylar Canada of the Boissevain Broncos. Canada collected 10 goals and 17 points during a recent four-game stretch, including a nine point performance in a Westman High School Hockey League win against the Hamiota Huskies.
– Mike Fisher scored a power-play 42 seconds into the third period as the Nashville Predators got past the Winnipeg Jets 4-3. Chris Thorburn, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler did the goal scoring for the Jets. Winnipeg is now 6-2 under new head coach Paul Maurice and are eight points back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Jets’ forward Evander Kane has a hand infection and won’t play again until after the Olympic break. Through 42 games this season, he has 15 goals and 29 points.
