– The Brandon Wheat Kings’ winless streak hit six games Monday with a 4-0 loss to the Regina Pats. Daniel Wapple stopped 23 shots for the shutout in the Regina net while Dyson Stevenson had two goals and an assist to spark the Pats offensively. The Wheat Kings have scored just seven goals in their last six games, and are 1-for-25 on the power-play in that span including going 0-for-5 Monday. – A career game for Elkhorn product Travis Sanheim. The Calgary Hitmen defenceman had five assists in Calgary’s 7-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels Monday, one shy of Calgary’s team record. Sanheim has nine points in the last three games and 25 points in 55 games during his rookie season with the Hitmen.
– The Neepawa Natives remain four points out of a playoff spot in the MJHL’s Sher-Wood Division. Travis Marit had a goal and three assists to pace the Winkler Flyers to a 6-3 win over the Natives Monday. Luke Karakas, Reigan Buchanan and Brady Bouchard scored for Neepawa. The Natives have just five games remaining in the regular season.
– The Manitoba Junior Hockey League Player of the Week is Brent Wold of the Dauphin Kings. Wold had three goals and five assists for eight points in five games last week.
– Taylor Leier of the Portland Winterhawks is the Western Hockey League’s Player of the Week. Leier had four goals and six assists for ten points in four games last week, helping the Winterhawks to four straight road victories.
– Top NHL draft prospect Anthony DeAngelo of the Sarnia Sting has been suspended for eight games by the Ontario Hockey League for harrassing or abusing a teammate. It’s believed to be the first time in OHL history that a player has been suspended for a violation of the league’s Harassment and Abuse/Diversity Policy against a teammate. It is DeAngelo’s second suspension under the policy this season but the first for comments directed at a teammate.
– The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired the eighth pick in the first round of the 2014 CFL draft plus Aussie punter Josh Bartel and Canadian lineman Shomari Williams in a trade that saw the Hamilton Tiger-Cats get the ninth and 11th picks.
– The women’s short-track relay team scooped up a silver medal Tuesday morning by finishing second in the three-thousand metre relay final. It first appeared the Canadians won bronze, but moved up when the Chinese team was disqualified. The medal is Canada’s 16th in Sochi.
– Carey Price has been selected as the starting goaltender for Wednesday’s quarter-final game in men’s hockey. He’ll face the winner of the Swiss-Latvia game set to begin at Noon, Eastern Time. Price has started two games in Sochi — a 3-1 victory over Norway and a 2-1 win in overtime against Finland.
– Will NHL players compete in the 2018 Winter Games? League commissioner Gary Bettman had no clear answer Tuesday when he met with the media in Sochi. He said no discussions have taken place yet on participating in South Korea.
– International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel says women’s hockey will ‘never’ be taken out of the Winter Olympics. Amid blowouts by Canada and the United States that have caused debate about the growth of the sport, Fasel said he would ‘guarantee’ women’s hockey would not be removed because of a lack of competitive balance.
– Police are investigating after a 12-year-old hockey player was injured after it appears a referee throws him to the ice attempting to break up a fight. Kainen Bell was hurt near the end of a semifinal game between teams from the Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation and the Sagkeeng First Nation in Winnipeg on Sunday. A video from the stands posted to YouTube showed a tense scene, with a parent screaming "get your hands off my kids,” from the stands as officials broke up the kids in front of the net. Robert Bell took his own video and says it shows the ref grabbing his son by the back of the armpits and "twirling, pivoting, slamming him on the ice". Police say the referee is 19 or 20 years old.
