– Chelsea Carey was disappointed in her own performance Monday at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The Manitoba skip struggled but was picked up by her team in a 7-3 win over Nova Scotia’s Heather Smith. The victory improved Carey’s record to 3-and-1, leaving her tied for fourth-place with Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton. Defending champion Rachel Homan remains undefeated at 4-and-0 with Alberta’s Val Sweeting and Newfoundland & Labrador’s Heather Strong tied for second at 4-and-1.
– It’s been a quality rookie season for Calgary HItmen blueliner Travis Sanheim. The Elkhorn product has four goals and 15 points in 47 games this season while also registering a +14 rating. Sanheim has had an opportunity to play regularly for the Hitmen this season, and the 17-year old says that plus being able to practice every day has really helped his confidence and development. The 6-foot-3, 190 pound Sanheim was ranked 167th among North American skaters in last month’s mid-term rankings by NHL Central Scouting. – The Brandon Wheat Kings have named captain Ryan Pulock as their Player of the Month for January. Pulock had three goals and 13 points in 11 games last month while also registering a plus-three rating.
– The Western Hockey League Player of the Week is Myles Bell of the Kelowna Rockets. Bell had six goals and three assists for nine points in three games last week.
– Former Brandon Wheat Kings’ captain Keith Aulie has had a black & blue season so far. The Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman has played just ten games in 2013-2014 thanks to a separated shoulder and, most recently, a broken hand and said on CKLQ’s Monday Sports Talk this week that it’s been a long season for him, but it’s nice to be healthy again. Aulie returned to action two weeks ago but will be getting another break shortly, along with other NHLers not playing at the Olympics. – John Tortorella’s return to the Canucks bench didn’t help as his team fell 2-0 to the Red Wings in Detroit on Monday night. Justin Abdelkader scored twice, including an empty-net goal, while Jimmy Howard and Jonus Gustavsson combined to stop 24 shots in the shutout. – The Virden Oil Capitals Player of the Month is defenceman Kevin Pochuk. Pochuk had two goals and eight points in six games last month, giving him 30 points in 32 games with the Oil Caps this season.
– The MJHL Player of the Week is Tanner Lomsnes of the Dauphin Kings. Lomsnes had five goals and eight points in three games last week, helping the Kings push their winning streak to ten games. Dauphin currently leads the Sherwood Division by four points over the second-place Virden Oil Capitals.
– Manitoba soccer fans have received some welcome news. The Canadian Women’s National Team will be hosting the United States in a ‘friendly’ on Thursday, May 8th at Investors Group Field. Tickets for the game in Winnipeg go on sale February 14th. Winnipeg is one of the host cities for FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, but Canada won’t play any of its games at IGF.
– The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have re-signed Canadian offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk and Canadian defensive lineman Ryan Lucas. Kowalczuk has spent the last four seasons with the Bombers while Lucas is entering his sixth CFL season and third with the Bombers.
– More than 111 million people watched the Super Bowl this year, making it the most watched TV event in history. An even bigger audience of 115 million people watched Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers halftime show, and Fox says an average of 528,000 people watched the live Internet stream of Sunday’s rout by the Seattle Seahawks over the Denver Broncos. The number of Super Bowl related tweets was 24.9 million, up from 24.1 million such tweets last year.
– Canada Post is honouring three female pioneers of winter sports. With the Sochi Olympics about to start, the post office is rolling out stamps honouring freestyle skier Sarah Burke, curler Sandra Schmirler and figure skater Barbara Ann Scott.
