Virden-based figure skaters Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers have their sights set on Sochi and they’ll have strong support back in Westman they make their Olympic Winter Games debut.
More than 300 people packed the Sunrise Banquet Hall at Tundra Oil and Gas Place for a sendoff reception on Tuesday night.
"It’s a pretty awesome feeling and humbling. It’s a bit strange too to be completely honest. We are so used to just doing our own thing and being in our own little world. It’s strange to think that so many people would come out to wish us well and send us off," said Lawrence.
Lawrence and Swiegers along with their head coach Patty Hole head to Sochi on Sunday with the figure skating events starting on February 6th.
"Something I’m really looking forward to is the opening ceremonies. Everybody that I have talked to that has been Olympians; they always talk about that moment, walking into the stadium for the first time with crowd and the camera flashes going off. It’s something that’s resonated deep within me," said Swiegers. "I’m also pretty pumped about skating on the Olympic ice with the Olympic rings on the ice."
The duo secured their spot on the Canadian team following a bronze medal finish at the nationals in Ottawa earlier this month.
