– Duncan Campbell scored the shootout winner as the Brandon ‘AAA’ Midget Wheat Kings edged the Eastman Selects 4-3 to clinch top spot in the regular season standings. Coltyn Bates, Zach Whitecloud and Ty Lewis had the goals in regulation for Brandon. In other action, Tanner Lewis scored twice as the Southwest Cougars were doubled by the Central Plains Capitals 6-3 and the Yellowhead Chiefs dropped a costly 3-1 decision against the Kenora Thistles. Jordan Robertson recorded the lone goal for the Chiefs, who sit two points back of the Interlake Lightning for the final playoff spot. Yellowhead hosts the Pembina Hawks at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shoal Lake in their final regular season game.
– Drake Lindsay and Steven Phillips each scored twice as Neepawa defeated Waywayseecappo 5-3 to move the Natives within two points of the Wolverines for the MJHL’s final playoff spot. Elsewhere, the Virden Oil Capitals dropped a 5-2 decision against the Steinbach Pistons. Mack Hardy had a goal and an assist while Kevin Pochuk added two helpers for the Caps’, who remain four points back of the Dauphin Kings in the race for top spot in the Sher-Wood Division.
– The Winnipeg Jets fell 4-3 in a shootout against the St. Louis Blues and go into the Olympic break two point shy of a playoff spot with a 28-26-6 record. Mark Scheifele scored twice while Dustin Byfuglien had the other goal for the Jets.
– A heartbreaking 6-5 semifinal loss for Manitoba’s Chelsea Carey against Alberta’s Val Sweeting at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Saturday. Carey has a chance to bring back a bronze medal when she takes on Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton on Sunday afternoon while Sweeting faces Canada’s Rachel Homan in the final on Sunday evening.
– Sister act sucess at the Sochi Winter Games. Justine Dufour-Lapointe of Montreal won Canada’s first gold medal and her sister Chloe was on the podium beside her with a silver in freestyle moguls. Canada’s Mark McMorris also added a bronze medal win in men’s snowboard slopestyle. Meanwhile, the Canadian women’s hockey women began defence of their Olympic title with a 5-0 victory over Switzerland. Rebecca Johnston led the way with a goal and a two assists.
