Sneakers were a natural fit for Brandon Bobcats’ sophomore Turell Scott.
"Since I was a little I had a ball in my hand. I had the Fisher Price hoop. Me and my little brother would always be going at it," Scott told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston.
Scott’s father Tony played CIS basketball with Lakehead and Winnipeg and Turell says that gives him motivation to succeed.
"It’s cool having my dad play CIS and me too, but I want to make it farther than him," said Scott. "He says I can do it, he believes in me. He says just work hard and you can make it to the next level, but sometimes I’m lazy so he gets on me about that. He’s always pushing me to work harder."
Scott’s efforts were recognized in his freshman season when he was named the Bobcats’ top rookie.
Through 16 conference games this year, he’s averaging 4.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 14.8 minutes of playing time per-game.
"Turell would tell you his year has been inconsistent. He’s shown glimpses of being real good. He’s talented, can defend multiple positions, can shoot the basketball and attack the rim. We look for big things down the road from Turell," said coach Gil Cheung.
"How I envision myself is being able to do it all. Handle the ball, shoot, rebound, play defence and anything coach asks me, I want to be able to go out there and do it," added Scott.
The 6-foot-5 guard will be back in his neck of the woods this weekend as the BU men’s team heads to B.C. for games against the Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Port Coquitlam product and his Bobcats have their backs against the wall, trailing the final two playoff spots by 12 points with just six games to go.
