– The second-ranked Brandon University women’s volleyball team has been eliminated from the Canada West playoffs in stunning fashion. Shanlee McLennan had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs for the Lady ‘Cats, who suffered a four set loss against UBC Okanagan on Friday night to fall in two straight matches in the best-of-three first round series.
– The Brandon University men’s volleyball team has advanced to the Canada West Final Four. The defending conference champions beat the UBC Thunderbirds in a five set thriller to sweep the best-of-three quarter-final in two straight matches behind 18 kills from Sebastien Steigmeier.
– The Brandon University basketball teams split their games against the Regina Cougars on Friday night. The Lady ‘Cats got 15 points from Cassie Cooke in a lopsided 102-50 loss against the fourth-ranked Cougars. On the men’s side, Brandon beat Regina 81-67 with Kenonte Ramsey recording a game-high 25 points. The BU basketball teams have identical records of 6-15 and will finish their conference schedule with rematches against the U-of-R on Saturday.
– A much better performance but still a loss for the Brandon Wheat Kings as they dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Kootenay Ice. Brett Kitt scored both goals for the Wheat Kings, doubling his season total, while Jordan Papirny stopped 33 shots in the Brandon net. The Wheat Kings earn a single point and now sit tied for second-place in the East Division, one point behind the first-place Regina Pats. Brandon will host Kootenay again Saturday. – Jordy Stallard had a goal and three assists to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to an 8-3 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs in Game #1 of their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League Quarter-Final series. Duncan Campbell scored twice and James Shearer added a goal and two helpers for the Wheat Kings. Josh Martin and Morgan Geekie had a goal and two assists each for the Chiefs, who host Game #2 of the best-of-five series on Sunday night in Shoal Lake.
– Curtis Houlden and Artsiom Kalashnikov had two goals and an assist each as the Virden Oil Capitals downed the Neepawa Natives 10-4 on Friday night in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action. Lucas Oliver added three helpers for the Caps, who sit seven points back of the Dauphin Kings in the race for top spot in the MJHL’s Sher-Wood Division. Elsewhere, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines got a hat-trick from Craig Fournier in a 6-4 loss to the Swan Valley Stampeders.
– The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has released its all-star teams, with Wyatt Kalynuk of the Virden Oil Capitals named to the All-Rookie team. The Oil Caps, Waywayseecappo Wolverines and Neepawa Natives were all shut out for the first and second all-star teams.
– Curl Manitoba has released the seeds for next week’s Provincial Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championship. Defending champion Bob Sigurdson is the top seed for the Senior Men’s, followed by Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson. For the Senior Women’s, defending champion Lois Fowler of Brandon is the top seed. The Championships both begin Thursday at the Brandon Curling Club.
– The Winnipeg Blues Bombers have re-signed non-import safety Dan West and inked import receiver Antonio Robinson. West has played in 27 games over the last two seasons with the Bombers, recording two defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles while Robinson spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad before playing in the United and Arena Football Leagues.
