Natasha Rupa is learning the CIS ropes on the fly.
Rupa is running the offence as a rookie with the Winnipeg Wesmen with the 5-foot-8 setter stepping into a starting role in the second-half of the Canada West campaign.
"I’ve adapted pretty well to the game. My teammates have been really encouraging," Rupa told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston.
The former Shoal Lake Sharks’ standout committed to head coach Diane Scott and the U-of-W last spring.
In her freshman year, Rupa has recorded a team-high 342 assists to go along with eight aces, 59 digs and 10 blocks, while starting seven of the 17 matches she’s played in.
"lt’s a lot of pressure, but I’m glad Di feels confident that she can count on me to get the job done," said Rupa. "It’s definitely been a lot to take in and a lot of focus."
Rupa was recognized as a graduating all-star in her senior season with Shoal Lake and represented Manitoba’s under-18 this past summer at the Volleyball Canada National Team Challenge Cup.
She was also named a provincial A tournament all-star in 2011 where she helped her high school team to a silver medal.
Rupa knows the experience she’s gaining now will be leaned on in the seasons to come.
"It’s a big benefit I think. I’ve learned so much and it’s only going to continue to build from here," added Rupa. "It’s a more lot intense and a lot more time commitment to your playing, your workouts and everything. It’s been a good experience and I’ve enjoyed it."
Rupa and the Wesmen are 6-12 on the season and sit two matches back of the conference’s final playoff spot with four to play.
