Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – Members of the the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships are in Brandon this weekend checking up on facilities before the Sportsplex is set to host the event for the second consecutive year.
The 2017 event was a successful after the facilities were ready just days before the event started.
Sports Chairman of the Royal Canadian Legion Angus Stanfield says that won’t be the case this year.
"We don’t have that stress on our shoulders this year, which is always a relief," said Stanfield. "We’re just making sure everything is ready for the amount of people coming to the city in August."
Stanfield says all cities excel in the second year of hosting the event, after going through the process once and knowing what needs to happen to make the event memorable again.
"There are no surprises this time around," said Stanfield.
When the event takes place between August 10 and 12, more the 400 kids could be competing in the events.
Organizers for next year’s event in Cape Breton will also be coming to Brandon to view the festivities and learning what works and what doesn’t.
Stanfield says the one thing that makes Brandon unique to any other location is the community support.
"You knew this event was taking place in the city," said Stanfield. "It’s the perfect size for a city hosting this type of event."
