– The Brandon Wheat Kings scored four third period goals to beat the Yellowhead Chiefs 6-4 Sunday night and take a 2-0 lead in their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League Quarter-Final series. Ty Lewis had three goals and two assists for Brandon while Robert Hechler added two goals and an assist. Morgan Geekie had three goals and an assist in a losing cause for Yellowhead. Game #3 of the Best-of-Five series goes Wednesday night at the Sportsplex in Brandon.
– Wheat Kings’ prospect Kirklan Lycar had a goal and two assists to lead the Eastman Selects to a 5-3 win over the Southwest Cougars Sunday, giving Eastman a 2-0 lead in their Best-of-Five Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League Quarter-Final series. Tyler Kirkup had two goals in a losing cause for Southwest. Game #3 of that Best-of-Five series goes Wednesday in Beausejour.
– Kurt Johnas scored twice and Adam Iwan stopped 20 shots to lead the Virden Oil Capitals to a 4-1 victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines Sunday night. Curtis Houlden and Ben Williams also scored for Virden while Robert Briem scored the lone goal for Wayway. The Oil Caps’ win allows them to stay within nine points of Dauphin for first-place in the MJHL’s Sher-Wood Division. The Kings had two goals and an assist from Jared Morris in a 6-4 win over Portage Sunday night while the only other game saw the Steinbach Pistons top the Winnipeg Blues 5-2.
– The Brandon Wheat Kings will be out to end a five-game winless streak Monday afternoon when they pay a visit to the Regina Pats (1:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ). The Wheat Kings dropped a 5-2 decision to Kootenay their last time out on Saturday night, and were missing five regulars due to injury for that contest. There’s no word if any of those players will be back for Monday’s game. Brandon is going into the game trailing the first-place Pats and Swift Current by two points in the East Division standings.
– The 45th Annual Hockey Brandon Tournament of Champions concluded Sunday with a pair of Westman teams walking away with titles. The Virden Jr. Oil Capitals won the Bantam A Division, downing the Estevan Bruins 9-4 in yesterday’s final while the Brandon Wheat Kings took the Female Pee Wee AA Division with a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg East Saints in the final. The Parkland Rangers won the Bantam AAA title while the Northwest Ontario North Stars took the Bantam AA crown.
– Defenceman Drew Doughty scored both goals for Canada Sunday in a 2-1 overtime victory over Finland to finish round-robin play at the Olympics at 3-and-0. Despite going undefeated in the preliminaries, Canada is seeded third heading into the quarter-finals with Sweden holding top spot and the U.S. taking second because of a better goal differential. Canada will play Wednesday against either Latvia or Switzerland.
– Canada increased its medal total at the Sochi Olympics with two more podium finishes on Sunday. Dominique Maltais of Petite-Riviere-St-Francois, Quebec won silver in women’s snowboard cross, and Jan Hudec of Calgary took home bronze in the men’s super-G. Canada is tied with Norway for fourth in total medals with 14. The Netherlands leads with 17.
– Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are in second spot after the ice dance short program on Sunday. The pair is trying to defend their Olympic gold from 2010, but will have to outperform their U.S. rivals, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who are in first. The Americans are the current world champions.
– Canada is rolling into the semis in both women’s and men’s curling. Jennifer Jones and her rink from Winnipeg ran their record at the Olympics to a 8-and-0 Sunday with a 7-6, 11-end decision over the United States. And Brad Jacob’s rink clinched second place in the round robin on the men’s side with a pair of wins, including a 9-8 extra-end win over China.
– Carmelo Anthony made an All-Star record eight three-pointers and scored 30 points to help the Eastern Conference overcame Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and the Western Conference for a 163-155 victory in the NBA All-Star game on Sunday night. The East scored the final 10 points to pull out a game they trailed by 18. Durant and Griffin each finished with 38 points, four shy of the NBA All-Star game record.
