Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – At first glance, the Brandon Bobcats travelling to Carmen for an intrasquad game was unusual.
The four volleyball and basketball teams had been going to different venues for the past three years, but they had been going to mainly Westman communities.
Carmen is a two hour trip and is closer to Winnipeg than it is to Brandon.
But Carmen was a place they had to go to as middle Mason Metcalf is from the small town, and hasn’t played in the gym since graduating from high school.
He took up the sport in Grade 7 and went on to play at Carmen Collegiate till he graduated.
Metcalf is coming off representing Canada at the World University Games and he says he is quite excited to play at his alma mater.
"It’ll be nice to play in front of teachers who taught me and schoolmates," says Metcalf.
"Mason is an excellent role model and we cannot wait to see him compete in his home gym," said principal Jeff Latimer. "Mason has shown dedication and perseverance to excel at the U SPORTS level and those are the types of qualities that we want to instill in our students."
Metcalf is hoping to see a full house when the game takes place. The intrasquad game starts at 6:30pm.
