Brandon product Mike McEwen made a stop on 880, CKLQ’s Monday Sports Talk this week to preview the provincial men’s curling championship.
McEwen and crew are seeded second for the playdowns, which start Wednesday morning at the MTS IcePlex.
"There’s a lot of pride and history that goes with the Manitoba championships that goes way back to a history of winning and doing well at nationals. I think all of us are aware of that and it makes the Manitoba championship even that much more special if you were to win it," McEwen told Tyler Crayston and Lanny Stewart.
McEwen and his Winnipeg rink have reached the final at the Safeway Championship three times, but have fallen short of booking their spot for the Brier.
"This is our seventh year as a team, so far so good. We’re still alive and kicking and we’ve persevered through that all and I hope we’re going to get our due. As much as people say we’re kind of due, we’re going to have to go out there and earn it," said McEwen.
The Roar of the Rings and securing a spot for the Sochi Olympics was the brass ring teams were striving for.
McEwen has put that disappointment behind him and knows there’s still plenty to play for.
"There’s been a lot of drive and a lot of desire; you can see it in all the guys. We’ve totally shaken off what happened in December and I think we’re ready to give this a real go the best we can," added McEwen.
The provincial men’s championship is back in Winnipeg for the first time since 1995 when Kerry Burtnyk beat Baldur’s Rob Ramage in the final.
