Vancouver, BC (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings earned a single point on Sunday afternoon as they fell 3-2 to the Vancouver Giants in a shootout.
Assistant Coach Don MacGillivray said on the CKLQ pre-game show that when a team isn’t scoring they need to throw pucks at the net and hope to get an ugly one. Well, his team took that to heart in the first period vs the Giants.
On the powerplay, it was Connor Gutenberg who took a wrist shot. The puck hit a Giants defender and popped up and over Brandon native Trent Miner who got the start in goal for Vancouver.
With an assist on the goal, Zack Wytinck (1G-5A) has points in five straight games.
However, the Giants would respond on a powerplay of their own as Milos Roman was left alone in front and snapped home his 7th of the season.
In the second, the Wheat Kings would re-take the lead as Caiden Daley buried a rebound for his 2nd of the season. Brandon outshot the Giants 13-7 in the middle frame.
The Giants would tie the game on the powerplay in the third period. With Baron Thompson off for kneeing, Brayden Watts deflected home his 4th of the season. A frustrating third period for Brandon saw Linden McCorrister hit the goal post twice, on glorious scoring chances.
Despite earning a powerplay in the extra frame, the Wheat Kings couldn’t get the goal they needed to earn an extra point. Miner would finish the night with 37 saves against his hometown team.
Only one of six shooters in the skills competition would find the back of the net as Brayden Watts earned the game-winner beating Jiri Patera over the blocker side to seal the victory for the Giants.
Brandon’s record drops to 6-3-3-2 on the season while going 0-2-1-1 through four games on this West Coast road trip.
Next action for the Wheat Kings comes up on Tuesday in Prince George. (8:30 MB time on QCountry Radio)>
