Manitoba’s Chelsea Carey continues to be tied for second-place at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women’s Curling Championship in Montreal.
Three in the tenth end helped Carey defeat New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford 8-4 on Wednesday night, improving their record to 7-and-1.
"It was really sold early, and then I kind of got useless in the middle and then recovered to make that last shot, at least," said Carey afterward, "Sort of handed it back-and-forth a little towards the end, which was frustrating but all that matters is the ‘W’, and we managed to pull that out."
Carey is tied with Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton for second-place, one game behind defending champion and 8-and-0 Rachel Homan.
Manitoba can clinch a playoff spot with a victory in their next game, which is Thursday afternoon against Ontario’s Allison Flaxey (former Manitoba Junior champion Allison Nimik).
"We put ourselves where we want to be. As long we win one game (today), we should be in something. We just want to make the playoffs, " said Carey, "The 1-2 game would be a great bonus but we just set our first goal as make the playoffs and then we’ll reassess from there."
Carey had beaten Quebec’s Allison Ross 15-3 in her Wednesday afternoon game, tying the Scotties record for points in a game.
Usually, a blowout like that would bring early handshakes, but the Scotties mandates teams play at least a full eight ends.
