The Brandon University men’s volleyball team knocked off the UBC Thunderbirds in a five set thriller on Friday night to book their spot for the Canada West Final Four.
Set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-15 and 21-19.
Sebastien Steigmeier scored 18 kills for the defending conference champions, who swept the best-of-three first round playoff series in two straight matches.
"It’s one of those things where we put ourselves in a situation to have a chance and we got a group of guys that believe in each other," coach Grant Wilson told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "There was maybe times where we weren’t playing our best volleyball. We battled through a lot of adversity throughout the year and this match, but guys continued to believe and thankfully we found a way."
Sam Tuivai added 15 kills while Frank Jones had nine blocks for Brandon, who take on the second-ranked Trinity Western Spartans in next weekend’s semifinal in Langley, B.C. with a spot in CIS nationals at stake.
