The Brandon University men’s basketball team failed to finish their Canada West home schedule on a winning note.
Fifth-year Emerick Ravier and Kenonte Ramsey recorded 16 points each as the Bobcats fell 94-78 to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on senior’s night at the Healthy Living Centre.
"It’s the little things that kind of hurt us," Ravier told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "Sometimes we fall asleep on certain plays; defensively we just fall asleep sometimes. Lethbridge is a great team and they make us pay for it. It’s unfortunate."
Fellow fifth-year Jordan Reaves had 13 points in his final farewell on home court while Ilarion Bonhomme also added 13 points for BU, who saw their record slip to 5-15.
"I’m disappointed we lost, but I’m more sad about leaving the team and this being my last game in this gym," said an emotional Reaves. "I put five years of my soul into this place. It’s going to be tough to move from this."
The ‘Horns didn’t spoil the party entirely as the Lady ‘Cats got a game-high 20 points from Cassie Cooke and knocked off Lethbridge 70-59.
"We made some clutch shots down the stretch against their zone and when you’re able to do that it really sticks the dagger in, so to speak," said coach Novell Thomas.
Kalea Cranston was next with 15 points while Jaynell Gillett got seven points and nine rebounds in her final home game in Brandon.
"This is a pretty big deal for me to win our last home game," said Gillett.
Stephanie Haynes had 11 points for Brandon, who improved to 6-14 and have program’s highest win total in over 30 years.
The BU basketball teams finish the regular season on the road this coming weekend against the Regina Cougars.
Elsewhere, the Brandon University women’s volleyball team knocked off the Calgary Dinos in a sweep to secure second-place in Canada West with an impressive 17-5 record.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-16 and 30-28.
Vaovai Aiono had 11 kills for the second-ranked Lady ‘Cats, who will host a first round best-of-three series starting Thursday at the HLC at 7 p.m. against the UBC-Okanagan Heat.
Shanlee McLennan had a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs for Brandon.
Meanwhile, the BU men’s volleyball team lost their match in straight sets to Calgary, but got some outside help with a win by the Saskatchewan Huskies over the Mount Royal Cougars to clinch a spot in the post-season.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20.
Sebastien Steigmeier scored 19 kills while Sam Tuivai added 13 kills for the ninth-ranked Bobcats, who finish with a record of 10-12 and will hit the road for the opening round.
