Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – A pair of pull-up jumpers and a timely defensive stop by Vasiliki Louka proved to be the difference as the visiting UNBC Timberwolves picked up a 66-65 win over the host Bobcats in women’s basketball on Friday.
Brandon led by three with forty-five seconds left, but a missed free-throw attempt proved costly. Louka calmly nailed a jumper ten seconds later before hitting another step-back jumper with seven seconds left to give the T-Wolves a one-point lead.
Louka then stopped a driving Keisha Cox in the dying seconds, which led to a missed desperation buzzer-beater by the Bobcats to seal the deal for UNBC.
The win moves UNBC’s record to 7-8 while the Bobcats fall to 2-11.
Meanwhile, the UNBC Timberwolves came out on top over the host Bobcats 85-79 in Canada West men’s basketball action.
Jovan Leamy and Volodymyr Pluzhnikov provided a 1-2 offensive punch for the Timberwolves. Leamy paced UNBC with 22 points, while Pluzhnikov provided 21 points.
UNBC’s recent run has their record sitting just below .500 at 7-and-8.
BU had four players reach double figures in a losing cause. Tyvon Cooper led BU with 22 points, while Jonathan Range recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Pookie Saunders and John Paul each had 13 points as the Bobcats suffered their third straight setback to slip to 6-and-7.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at Brandon University’s Healthy Living Centre. Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled at 5 pm, while the men’s play at 7pm.
