The playoff chase continues at the Healthy Living Centre for the Brandon University men’s basketball team.
The Bobcats are hosting the Manitoba Bisons and are six points back of the fourth and final post-season spot in the conference’s Prairie Division.
A short-term approach has been preached and accepted.
"It’s what we’ve tried to focus on, what we try to harp as a coaching staff. I think our athletes have really bought into it right now," said coach Gil Cheung this week, "They understand the value of each quarter, each offensive/defensive possession and each rebound."
BU is riding a season-high three-game winning streak and have an overall record of 4-and-8.
"That’s when we play our best is when we’re focused on each possession and we’re not lackadaisical, we’re not casual, but at the same time, we’re not over pressuring ourselves and thinking this is going to be life and death," added Cheung, "When guys are focused in and they buy-in to the concepts that we’re preaching, we do a pretty good job."
On the women’s side, the Lady ‘Cats are 3-9 and are one victory away from matching the team’s highest win total since 2003-2004.
The focus is on the future, not the past struggles that the program has gone through.
"What happened in the past is happened in the past and quite a few of the individuals and coaches on this team weren’t a part of that," said Thomas. "We’re just trying to create our own little thing here, I don’t know what you want to call it. Just through hard work and being competitive when we need to be."
Brandon is coming off their first home court win in over three years last weekend.
"I’m sure for them to be the group to do it, it’s rewarding, but we can’t get complacent with any win, whether it be on the road or at home. There are other games where we could have had that home win earlier on in the year, but we didn’t," added Thomas. "It’s nice to get it, it’s nice to know that it can be done and we can definitely do it again."
Game times Friday are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the HLC and you can catch the games on WCG-TV or on www.canadawest.tv
