Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - The Assiniboine Community College Cougars women's hockey team is heading down to Columbus, Ohio, taking part in the American Collegiate Hockey Association's national championship tournament.
The Cougars have only been apart of the conference for two years, but this year was the first year they were eligible to qualify for nationals, and qualify they certainly did.
The Cougars finished with a 19-8-0-0 record, good for 38 points, finishing 3rd in points percentage in the West region.
ACC will enter the tournament in the #3 seed in the West region and will take on two teams from their three-team group, and one other team in another group.
They start their tournament against the North Dakota State Bisons on Wednesday at 7:45pm.
Then on Thursday they take on Bishops and Friday they face Adrien.
If they finish first in their group that involves Bishop and Adrien, they advance to the semi-finals which are on Saturday.
Head Coach Terry Arksey says he only has one goal.
"I think we can win the tournament, so we want to win all three games so we can advance to the semi-finals." said Arksey.
Arksey says he's trying not to surprise anybody either.
"No one is going to be surprised of our team," said Arksey, "They know how we play and what we've done this year."
The Cougars are hoping to become the second straight Canadian team to win the championships after Lakehead University, from Thunder Bay, Ontario, won last year over North Dakota State.
