Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - A movement to increase awareness about recovery has been organized at the local, provincial and federal level for almost a decade.
Now it's come to Brandon.
The first annual Recovery Day will be held at the Global Market on Saturday morning.
Organizer Deirdra Taylor-John says many former substance abusers have trouble with society's judgment.
"Drugs have no prejudices, it can happen to anyone. So, when we come together as a community, and support one another, it can really help in the recovery process," said Taylor-John.
She said she hopes to see lots of people downtown this weekend, but also is looking forward to meeting others at the event who may be interesting in helping organize next year's event.
"It doesn't matter who you are. It can happen to anyone," said Taylor-John. "Everyone knows someone who may be struggling with addiction at some point in their lives."
She also said Brandon Mayor Rick Chrest has been very supportive in lending a hand to make this event happen.
Chrest will be making an official proclamation at 11:30a.m..
